About

Shayan Rose Ben Sira, Artist

I'm Shayan, an interdisciplinary artist. Today I focus mainly on ceramics, glass blowing and wood work.

I explore primitive firing techniques and specialize in the Japanese Naked Raku technique. The term “Raku” means “ease”, “comfort”, “pleasure” and “happiness”. The origins of this technique lie in 16th century Japan, and the works in this technique are influenced by the aesthetics of the Zen Buddhism, which embraces and finds beauty in imperfection. I make all my work by hand from clay, using the slab roller method, and incorporate glass. The ceramic pieces are polished and fired in a special kiln, in live fire fed by gas, at a temperature of 930 degrees. My technique holds very little control over the result, so no two pieces are alike. The proccess with its extreme conditions and unknown outcomes is very exciting,  full with anticipation.

I work in my studio at “Ronit Farm”, where I conduct workshops for individuals and groups, host Artist Workshops and alternative firings. I kindly invite you to come visit me at the studio, view my work and experience a live raku firing by appointment.

Give me a call to book a visit.
